13 June 2025 Government identifies geopolitical as the latest challenge to the growth of Uganda’s economy which has been projected to grow at 7% in the next financial year. Secretary to the Treasury Ramathan Ggoobi admits that such challenges disrupt trade, influence investment and affect asset prices hence leading to reduced economic growth. Speaking during the post budget conference in Kampala, Ggoobi says to address this challenge, government is re-purposing the available resources to the critical needs for Ugandans.
13 June 2025 The constitutional court has concluded hearing a petition filed by a constitutional lawyer Amos Kuuku in which he seeks an order to stop use of cash as a condition for bail saying it discriminates against the poor and infringes on the right to liberty. The issue of cash bail has recently caused an uproar within the legal fraternity after magistrates or judges ordered suspects to deposit huge sums of money. In the year 2022 Buganda road grade one magistrate Siena Owomugisha ordered Dr Besigye to pay 30 million shillings in cash while recently, advocate Eron Kiiza was ordered by high court judge Micheal Elubu to pay 20 million shillings. The petitioner Amos Kuuku argues that courts can demand for substantial securities and also give non cash bail instead of cash that many may not be able to raise The petition has been heard by a panel of justices of the constitutional court led by deputy chief justice Dr Flavian Zeija who say they will deliver their ruling on notice. Meanwhile the same court has heard another petition by Lawyer Michael Aboneka seeking an order to stop the president from appointing Members of parliament as ministers saying it distorts the principle of separation of powers Aboneka says that there should be a constitutional order or provision requiring MPs appointed as ministers in future to resign from their seats. 13 June 2025 Policy and budget analysts are concerned that the budget allocations failed to apportion a significant amount to some of the sectors that are identified to drive the economy for the financial year. The 72.3 trillion shillings budget for 2025/2026 financial year read by the finance minister yesterday allocated 1.86 trillion to agro industrialization and 430 billion to the tourism sector. According to the experts allocating less than 1% of the entire budget to each of the two sectors considered to be among the key drivers of the economy is a miss match to the objective. Robert Mbaziira, a senior Tax Manager Ernest and Young also explains that the government strategy to widen the tax base through the NIN intervention is a milestone to reducing the tax burden on a few section of tax payers. This during the budget breakfast meeting organized by Ernest and Young at Sheraton hotel. Meanwhile Hamza Ssali Mukasa, Senior Tax Manager says that the government need to emphasize implementation and monitoring to ensure that the budget benefits the masses. Story by Eva Namugabi
