03 May 2024
Journalists in Uganda join their counterparts globally to celebrate the World Press Freedom Day which falls every 3rd May
The Day was designated by the United Nations General Assembly to remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold freedom of the press.
In a statement, the UN says this year , World Press Freedom Day is dedicated to the importance of journalism and freedom of expression in the context of the current global environmental crisis.
It says awareness of all aspects of the global environmental crisis and its consequences is essential to build democratic societies and that Journalistic work is indispensable for this purpose.
The UN recognizes that Journalists encounter significant challenges in seeking and disseminating information on contemporary issues, climate migration, extractive industries, illegal mining, pollution, poaching, deforestation, or climate change.
It notes that ensuring the visibility of these issues is crucial for promoting peace and democratic values worldwide.
In the meantime, As journalists in Uganda join their counterparts globally to celebrate the World Press Freedom Day, former Shadow Information Minister Joyce Bagala demands that government upholds freedom of expression.
Bagala says that the constitution spells out the right to freedom of expression, as a fundamental right but shows concern that this has been violated by the state
She points failure by government reopen social media platform face book to enable Ugandans express themselves freely.
