Al Qaeda, Al-shabaab using local rebels ADF - security
US authorities have charged a man with providing material support to Somali Islamist militant group al-Shabab.
Zachary Adam Chesser, 20, was detained on 10 July as he tried to board a flight to Uganda.
He allegedly told federal agents he had twice tried to go to Somalia to join al-Shabab, which recently claimed responsibility for July 11th Bomb attacks in Kampala.
Al-Shabab has taken control of large parts of Somalia and claims to have links with al-Qaeda.
Chesser was also named in court papers as Abu Talhah al-Amrikee.
He allegedly told investigating agents that he maintained several online profiles dedicated to extremist jihad propaganda.
The UPDF says it has confirmed that there is a link between the Al-Qaeda, the Alshabab and Ugandan rebels the Allied Democratic forces.
The army says this link might have facilitated the July 11th Bomb attacks in Kampala.
The commander of the Land forces Lt General Katumba Wamala tells the defense and internal affairs committee of parliament that they have established that the kind of bombs and method of attacks used are similar to those used by the al-Qaeda and the ADF when it attacked Uganda in 1998.
He says the ADF might have been part of this operation.
Meanwhile Lt Gen Katumba Wamala confirms that the Al-shabab carried out attacks on AMISOM positions the day the bombs went off in Kampala but dismisses reports indicating that as a result of those attacks AMISOM forces lost key positions.
