Tobacco firms worry over brand ruling
Tobacco groups suffer a major setback in their attempt to block UK Government plans to introduce plain packaging for cigarettes.
The groups have lost a legal battle to prevent similar measures in Australia, which will become the first country to have tobacco products in plain packets with graphic warnings and no logos.
The move makes it easier for UK to have similar laws, which might affect UK-based firms especially those operating in commonwealth countries like Uganda.
More tax services to be online
Uganda Revenue Authority is in the process of computerizing all its services, following the successful launch of its online motor vehicle registration platform.
Commissioner for Domestic Taxes Moses Kajubi says that in months time, driving permits and stamp duty will be processed online.
He says the move will make decentralization of services to the countryside easy.
New Ferry launched for Kalangala Islands
A new ferry, MV Pearl goes live on Lake Victoria this Friday, linking Kalangala Islands and the mainland in Masaka District.
The ferry built by Kalangala Infrastructure services, is part of government’s bigger plans of improving infrastructure including energy and roads in Kalangala.
Uganda National Roads Authority says the ferry will improve transport and trade through Luuku landing site in Kalangala and Bukakata in Masaka.
Hackers attack Uganda websites
Uganda’s internet sector is under threat following a string of attacks on the country’s cyberspace affecting several organizations.
The foreign affairs ministry and the Uganda Securities Exchange websites have been targeted and over the last two days, the websites of the Office of the Prime Minister, the Prison Services and the Red Pepper publications were attacked.
All the cases point at Anonymous, a global protest hacking group, and is suspected to be targeting Uganda government for its anti-homosexual position.
