The ministry f foreign affairs says Uganda now has a debt of up to 15 billion shillings to international and regional bodies were it’s a member.
It’s a requirement that annually a member country pays subscription fees or else be blocked out of activities of such organizations.
The permanent Secretary ministry of foreign affairs Ambassador says Uganda is indebted to the African Union, IGAD the Organization of Islamic Cooperation among others.
Mugume says the OIC debt is putting the candidature of Isaac Musumba who has been fronted to contest for the position of OIC secretary general.
He adds that despite several reminders the ministry of finance has indicated that it cannot identify funds to clear such debts.
He was appearing before the committee on finance planning and economic development.
The ministry has also asked parliament to accept its proposal to have authority to spend at source none Taxable Revenue-NTR generated by missions abroad
Mugume says missions generate between 8 and 9 billion shillings annually and that this money would help in dealing with shortfalls
Meanwhile, Staff at the Ugandan high commission in Britain face possible prosecution for fraud connected to flouting the British custom and revenue guidelines of duty free goods
The permanent secretary of the ministry of foreign affairs Ambassador James Mugume says that an investigation is being conducted by British officials following a report that some staff bought duty free goods which are normally cheaper and sold them off instead of using them as provided by the guidelines
He confirms that already one person has been arrested while another is on the run but dismisses reports that the British authorities invaded the embassy
He was meeting the committee of parliament on Finance planning and economic development.
Mugume says that Uganda has indicated to the British that all those implicated should be prosecuted and that once a full list of those wanted is forwarded their diplomatic immunity will be lifted.
