Government wants to join forces with private members behind a Bill aimed at seizing assets of those convicted of corruption in order to recover tax payers’ money.
The Bill proposes tough measures including freezing assets or bank accounts of those under investigation for corruption and also attaching properties of relatives if it’s established that they were acquired through corrupt tendencies.
While Uganda has an anti-corruption act, the MPs say those convicted would prefer serving their jail term and there after return back to enjoy the stolen money.
Today the MPs behind the Bill led by Makindye West MP John Simbwa met Ethics and integrity minister Rev Father Simon Lokodo who indicated that he is excited about the move of the legislators but added that Government through his department had already started drafting a Bill.
Lokodo explained that there is a challenge that the Private Bill is likely to face including the MPs being asked to provide for a certificate of financial implications but added that this can be avoided if the MPs accept to merge their ideas with the legal team at his office.
Lokodo says that if the Mps accept his proposal the Government bill will be ready before the end of this year and that the ministry of finance has already provided 500 million to handle this bill faster.
