Local journalist group condemns abuse on journalists

A new Press Freedom Index report by Human Rights Network for Journalists (HRNJ) reports increasing cases of attacks on journalists and diminishing press freedom in the country last year.

The report indicates that 107 journalists were physically attacked compared to 58 journalists in 2010 using torture, shooting, arrests and incarceration as well as denying journalists news scenes and confiscating their equipment.

The report particularly accuses politicians and security agencies especially the police, army and other law enforcement agencies for using a high degree of impunity to attack journalists consequently inflicting physical harm onto them.

HRNJ Chairman Mulindwa Mukassa demands for prosecution of state agents accused of violating journalists rights and compensation of the victims while Haruna Kanaabi the executive Secretary Independent Media Council of Uganda ask development partners to attach strong restrictions on police support, to respect of press freedoms and journalists rights.
